WikiOhana
From RCC 2007
Evan Prodromou began by expressing the concern that the Wiki technology is beginning to outpace the growth of the Wiki community, and that there is a growing number of people who don't know the Wiki way, (or as one participant said, don't have the Wiki soul). Wiki Ohana is an attempt to help connect these people back to the Wiki community. (Ohana from the Hawaiian for "extended family", used in the animated movie Lilo and Stitch.) Not a metacommunity, but a way to allow new Wiki users to talk with more experienced ones, to learn from our mistakes and share new things they have learned.
Ohanan was suggested at WikiSym by MarkDilley, whom Evan wished would walk over to the Library and talk about the idea.
Proposal: a WikiOhana file is added to open source wiki packages/tarballs that would include:
- Welcome Wiki Developers
- Add Conferances
- Add Glossary
- Show Places to Learn
- Let folks know the culture
- WikiTree
RayKing asked, "Will Wiki survive? Or will it be replaced by the next new thing?" This led Evan to talk about Wikinomics, where the author claimed that a Wiki had nothing to do with Wiki software, but was any example of "user-created content" -- such as Youtube. Evan then had to protest that the book was not as bad as this excerpt suggested.
