Notes

  • Different communities have different names for patterns
    • MeatballWiki
      • voting is evil - article about voting with provocative title to start it off and get people engaged. What is the pattern here?
    • CommunityWiki
    • WikiScience - wikibook on how to start a wiki, maintain healthy wiki community, etc.

Ward's Wiki - original discussion on patterns a distraction from main purpose CommunityWiki - disc on larger wikis focused mostly on community dynamic - a word for word substitution of community for wiki

different dynamics in closed environment (company, class, organization) than open general internet where anyone can participate, i.e. not use harsh language with you on closed wiki where might do so in anonymity = wiki community mirrors physical community vs. wiki community is entirely virtual

  • communities entirely around a wiki vs. communities dismissive of wiki
  • don't make it ancillary
  • if they believe that it matters people will put work into it, but will not invest time if they think it doesn't matter

UseRealNames - how to verify real name? have them put up a picture?

Not really a way to verify, but the person is creating an identity that is easily verified with a little seaching (blog post, work, white pages...)

How do you evaluate the similarity of patterns Some people prefer Practices to Patterns - this is an issue of semantics, not so much philosophy

Actually I might have misspoken about that, I meant to imply that there is a fundamental difference in thinking about them as patterns (static) vs practices (fluid). MarkDilley
