you can redirect a page in a MediaWiki wiki, by inserting this simple code at the top of an empty page: 

#redirect PageDestination

We are doing these mostly in the user namespace, because unlike Wikipedia, which is encyclopedic in nature, people are in the main namespace. We do redirect the talk pages back to the persons User talk:name because of some of the special features you do get in the user namespace.
