PTP Play Day
From RCC 2007
How did this go?
The Personal Telco Project is planning to camp out on Saturday and do some work on the larger Personal Telco Network. People may come and go, others might want to drop in and see what we are up to, but the idea is to use the RCC event/venue as an excuse to get together and work on cool stuff and maybe do a bit of adhoc education and/or outreach at the same time.
If you are interested in things like wireless networking or distributed anarchic systems maintenance, you should stop by and see what we are up to.
Here are the things we might work on:
- Resurrect VPN tunnels between Nodes (see here)
- Play with Avahi as a DAAP server of local (free-as-in-freedom) content
- Use Cacti and SNMPD to monitor even more of our nodes (see here)
- Work on creating quality documentation, aka, the PTP Handbook (see here)
- Play with OSLRD for adhoc meshing.
- General discussion, planning, and tomfoolery
- Other stuff we haven't thought of yet
Feel free to contact Caleb Phillips with questions.
[edit]
Notes
- Establish space with table and chairs. Plug in laptop.
- Don Park arrives
- People show up and start talking about stuff.
- Talk about wikis, documentation
- Audrey suggests presenting front-page as two (or three levels of involvement): "Use A Node", "Host a Node"
- Talk about meshing, avahi, metrofi, and just about everything in between
- Talk about accounting and our non-profit status
- Patrick suggests that we ask an accounting student who wants non-profit experience to help us out
- SpeedGeeking. Use this (somewhat dated) presentation.
- RussellSenior Arrives, he forgot the Meraki-minis
- Food
- Caleb goes and gets his TV for the Wii (but forgets the remote. Whomp)
- WilCooley Arrives, TomHiggins couldn't make it
- Caleb toils on configuring nodes for snmpd
- Russell and Don discuss Corporation stuff (decide they need to contact Troy, but don't know how)
- Don goes to get a beer
- Talk about using JanusVM (and/or similar) to offer crypto to node users
- Don returns
- Closing circle, some people decide to stay later, eat pizza and work on various things. (Almost) all are sad that the venue prohibits beer. Several consider getting beer anyway, but decide that beer proprietors are too far away to overcome initial laziness.
- Caleb returns his TV
- People start to leave, we eventually get kicked out
- Russell and Caleb migrate to Lucky Lab. Reggie's Red is quite good.
- Caleb works until the luckylab closes, getting a VPN tunnel setup between Donk and NodeLuckyLab.
In the end we accomplished:
- Talked to lots of people (50?) about PTP, exchanged good ideas and gathered/provided advice
- Added about 8 more nodes to node-monitoring
- Got one vpn-link setup
Some crummy photos from my phone (maybe we will find some higher quality ones...)
